Ashram Lifestyle is the chance to live full time at the ashram for a minimum period of a month. During this time you will live and breathe yoga!
In life there is the inner and outer journey, but the difference when living full time at an ashram such as this, is that these two become more in synch. The usual ‘daily grind’ is replaced by karma yoga, practicing the ability to work without attachment to results and with full awareness. You will also experience and be inspired by the sangha (community) of living with others already established in yoga. This brings a sense of freedom and joy deep within. Of course it is not without its challenges, but these challenges become opportunities for self study and self awareness.
The ALS program is ongoing – you would join an existing group who already know the ropes, you will also have a mentor to encourage and facilitate your personal journey. The group is an integral part of the workings of this busy centre, taking on roles in one or two of the departments such as kitchen or housekeeping. The routine of ashram life is extremely beneficial with its regular and nutritious meals, daily yoga and chanting classes, out door activities, discussion groups, kirtan and creative sessions.
Level: Suitable for regular yoga practitioners
Prerequisite for ALS:
2 weeks Skills & Lifestyle stay OR 2 weeks made up of a combination of our other courses offered, all within the last 2 years OR enrolled in or completed Yogic Studies OR previous time in Rocklyn or Satyananda ashrams in India (with a reference or recommendation from the particular ashram).
For more information and expressions of interest please email us here
Please contact us for fee information.
There are no set dates for intake into the program, you may come on any date that has been pre-arranged with the ALS department at Mangrove Yoga Ashram.

Weekend (5pm Friday to 3pm Sunday)
With Swami Kriyatmananda & Swami Satyadharma
Origins of Yoga explicitly asks the question of where did yoga come from and implicitly asks what is it that we call yoga?
This weekend aims to give participants more than the standard introductory overview of yoga's roots and more than a brief gloss over its history. Being entitled "Origin" then the bias will be towards the early chapters of Yogic and Indian history but with due consideration to the Buddha and Mahavira in the Axial age and yoga's further evolution during the period known as the Golden Age. Swami Satyadharma will give insight into the primary texts from the Vedic and Brahmanic periods along with particular focus on Vedic fire ritual and the mantras associated with this practice. Swami Kriyatma will focus on the chronology, the controversy of the different arguments around chronology and also a deeper discussion on what are known as the darshanas of Sanatan Dharma.

The Vedic Tradition is one of the most ancient spiritual and mystical traditions on the planet, advocating a life of learning yoga. Vedanta holds that our real nature, our real Self, is pure, luminous and free - a manifestation of the Infinite Divine Reality. Meditative contemplation, trust in oneself, living in harmony with the environment and experiencing oneness in all interactions are some of the basic foundations of Vedanta. Yoga is the practical aspect of spiritual traditions like Vedanta, as it leads to enhanced awareness and realisation of personal belief. Practices such as asana, pranayama and meditation help to bring harmony of thoughts, behaviours and actions. This program is a balance of theoretical and practical sessions.

For those that may need more personal space and less structure than a themed program, or for those who just want to take some time out of the normal flow of life to rest, heal and restore, this is the perfect way. You can come for one day or stay a month, it’s up to you. Mid week stays can be particularly restful as this is usually a quiet time in the ashram.
During a personal retreat you will have the opportunity to be involved in all the normal activities of the day, including early morning yoga class, chanting, midday relaxation, afternoon meditation or asana class and evening program. Or you may choose to simply relax, enjoy the peaceful surroundings and dip into activities as you feel inclined. Either way there is plenty of opportunity for relaxation, reflection and restoration.
A personal retreat is a wonderful way to gain perspective, renewal of purpose and inspiration. Leisure activities can include bush walking, swimming, kayaking, reading, bird watching or help out with the activities of the centre, in the garden or kitchen.

Yoga is much more than just asanas and other practices that are done in the weekly class or the solitude of your bedroom. The insights and tranquillity developed there then need to be applied to everyday life and a Skills and Lifestyle Stay is a perfect way to do that, as well as learn a new skill or two.
Involvement in the everyday activities of the ashram includes a variety of daily yoga classes, chanting and relaxation integrated with participation in karma yoga (for half of each day). Karma yoga is really about applying the mindfulness of meditation to the action of work. Practicing that mindfulness in an ashram environment also integrates the spirit of seva (service to others).
There is scope for both practical and creative skills to be developed in the many departments of the ashram. The ability to relate and work with others and to apply yogic principals consciously to every aspect of life will enhance your day to day interactions and allow for more conscious living.
