  • Nishkam Seva - Freedom through work without expectation

Nishkam Seva - Freedom through work without expectation

Weekend (5pm Friday to 3pm Sunday)
In the past, seva weeks and months created an uplifting and positive experience of seva yoga for all. This year we offer more insight into the mysteries and inner workings of karma yoga through satsangs and meditations with Swami Anandakumar. With over 30 years experience both in Mangrove Yoga Ashram and Bihar School of Yoga in Munger, his life is an example of commitment to the path of selfless service and to Satyananda Yoga. His wisdom, stories and humour give light to this often misunderstood practice and yogic path.

This weekend is followed by an optional week long Seva Week Retreat 15-22 April (view under Volunteer Options). Experience the practice of seva in the ashram as a resident for 1 week!

"I ask you to look at Yoga not as a practice, but as a life itself.
If you are able to see Yoga as the movement of life, then every action
will be an expression of Karma Yoga, each understanding the expression of Jnana Yoga,
each effort you make will be part of Raja Yoga and each and every one of your experiences
will become part of Dhyana Yoga.”
    Swami Niranjanananda Sarawati

Origins of Yoga - Part 2

Weekend (5pm Friday to 3pm Sunday)

    Vedanta

With Swami Kriyatmananda & Swami Anandakumar
The Vedic Tradition is one of the most ancient spiritual and mystical traditions on the planet, advocating a life of learning yoga. Vedanta holds that our real nature, our real Self, is pure, luminous and free - a manifestation of the Infinite Divine Reality. Meditative contemplation, trust in oneself, living in harmony with the environment and experiencing oneness in all interactions are some of the basic foundations of Vedanta. Yoga is the practical aspect of spiritual traditions like Vedanta, as it leads to enhanced awareness and realisation of personal belief. Practices such as asana, pranayama and meditation help to bring harmony of thoughts, behaviours and actions. This program is a balance of theoretical and practical sessions.

Origins of Yoga - Part 1

Weekend (5pm Friday to 3pm Sunday)

With Swami Kriyatmananda & Swami Satyadharma
Origins of Yoga explicitly asks the question of where did yoga come from and implicitly asks what is it that we call yoga?

This weekend aims to give participants more than the standard introductory overview of yoga's roots and more than a brief gloss over its history. Being entitled "Origin" then the bias will be towards the early chapters of Yogic and Indian history but with due consideration to the Buddha and Mahavira in the Axial age and yoga's further evolution during the period known as the Golden Age. Swami Satyadharma will give insight into the primary texts from the Vedic and Brahmanic periods along with particular focus on Vedic fire ritual and the mantras associated with this practice. Swami Kriyatma will focus on the chronology, the controversy of the different arguments around chronology and also a deeper discussion on what are known as the darshanas of Sanatan Dharma.

Learn various breathing practices (pranayama) that direct energy into concentration and focus. Gain a practical understanding of the “5 pranas”. She continues to teach and lecture on the various aspects of yoga in Australia and abroad.

Swami Muktibodhananda was born in 1959 in Melbourne. From childhood she was drawn to the disciplines of yogic sadhana and ashram life. At the age of seventeen she went to India to live with her guru Swami Satyananda Saraswati. She returned to Australia and lives and teaches in Brisbane.

If you can be where you are, and accept things as they are, in that personal adjustment with the environment, with the conditions, states, different forms of behaviour, mentalities, attitudes and actions, you experience a very deep feeling of santosha, contentment, which is the achievement of karma yoga.
